Online Counseling in Nebraska: Frequently Asked Questions

Online Counseling Basics

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: starting counseling can feel vulnerable. If you live in rural Nebraska, have a full schedule, or value privacy, it can feel even harder.

Blue Elephant Counseling provides secure, fully online counseling for residents across Nebraska. Below are answers to the most common questions about online therapy, insurance, trauma treatment, and getting started.

Q: How does online counseling work in Nebraska?

All counseling sessions at Blue Elephant Counseling are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You meet with your licensed clinician from your home, office, or any private location within Nebraska.

Online counseling works similarly to in-person sessions — we talk, explore patterns, build coping strategies, and process experiences — without the drive time. For many Nebraskans, especially those in rural or frontier communities, telehealth removes significant barriers to care.

Q: Is online counseling as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes. Research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person counseling for many concerns, including anxiety, depression, and trauma-related symptoms.

Many clients actually find it easier to open up from their own environment, which can strengthen the therapeutic process.

If you’d like to explore the research in more depth, we break down the data and outcomes in our article: “Is Online Counseling Really Effective?”

Q: Is online therapy private and secure?

Yes. We use HIPAA-compliant technology to protect your confidentiality. Sessions are not recorded. Your information is protected under Nebraska law and professional ethical guidelines.

We understand that privacy matters — especially in smaller communities where “everyone knows everyone.”

Q: Do I need a referral to start counseling?

No referral is required. You can book directly with us.

Q: Do you serve small towns and rural areas in Nebraska?

Yes — that is a core part of our mission.

Blue Elephant Counseling was built to increase access to mental health services across rural Nebraska. If you live 30 miles from the nearest clinic or prefer not to be seen entering a local office, online counseling allows you to receive care discreetly.

Q: What counties in Nebraska do you serve?

We serve residents across the entire state of Nebraska through telehealth. Whether you live in a larger city like Grand Island or a smaller rural community, you can access counseling services from your home.

Q: What if I don’t want to be seen entering a local counseling office?

Online counseling allows you to receive care privately from your own space. Many clients in smaller communities appreciate the discretion and convenience telehealth provides.

Q: Can trauma therapy be done online?

Yes. Trauma-informed counseling, including EMDR therapy, can be effectively delivered online by trained clinicians. Many clients find trauma processing more comfortable in a familiar environment.

Q: Do you do counseling for kids?

Yes. Blue Elephant Counseling provides services for children 12 years old and up. Young children have a hard time participating in online services for longer than 30 minutes so adjustments for age, attention span, and ability to participate can be made. Children younger than 12 may be required to have parent/guardian participation. Appropriateness of online services is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Q: Do you offer in-person sessions?

No. Blue Elephant Counseling is an online mental health service provider only. We believe online services break down barriers to accessing high quality mental health services. We value the flexibility and reach that online services provide.

Q: Do you accept Medicaid for online counseling in Nebraska?

Yes. Blue Elephant Counseling accepts Nebraska Medicaid as well as several commercial insurance plans. We verify benefits before your first session so you know what to expect financially.

Please call to inquire about your specific insurance if you have further questions OR call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card to ask about providers and coverage for yourself or family.

  • Life transitions

Q: How do I schedule my first appointment?

Q: What happens in the first session?

Your first session focuses on understanding your goals, current concerns, and background. Together, you and your clinician will develop a plan that supports your growth and healing.

Q: What if I’m not sure counseling is right for me?

That’s completely normal. Many people feel unsure at first. A brief consultation can help you determine whether online counseling feels like a good fit.
